Greyhound's attack on the right to protest condemned |

People Before Profit councillor Tina MacVeigh is calling for a full investigation into the public health and safety standards of Greyhound vehicles and a pattern of behaviour whereby waste is being collected from consumers at inappropriate hours according to widespread complaints from customers. MacVeigh, who is one of a number of people including other councillors facing court action for an anti-protest injunction brought by Greyhound, said: "There has been huge public support for the protests against Greyhound strikebreaking operation. Yet we now face a serious attack on the right of people to peacefully protest. Greyhound has a dubious track record and serious questions have been raised by workers about its health and safety standards. Yet ironically the company is using an argument based on health and safety to prevent peaceful protest." MacVeigh continued: "People Before Profit is calling for a full investigation into the public health and safety standards of Greyhound vehicles and a pattern of behaviour whereby waste is being collected from consumers at inappropriate hours according to widespread complaints from customers. Greyhound should never have been given the contract to collect waste in Dublin as it is controlled by an offshore company based in the Isle of Man. "It has already been forced to pay Iarnroid Eireann an agreed settlement of over €1 million for 'discrepancies' in its invoicing. "The workers of Greyhound are being confronted by a 21st century William Martin Murphy who has demanded a 35% reduction in pay. If Greyhound succeed in this dispute it will set off a further race to the bottom and lead to more employer attacks on workers' wages and conditions. "In a country where significant numbers of people have already joined the category of the working poor, this is simply unacceptable." Councillor MacVeigh concluded: "Whatever the outcome of any case, I shall be standing with the workers of Greyhound in their fight to maintain a decency threshold."
