Bring Your Limericks to Limerick |

This year's Bring Your Limericks to Limerick competition takes place in the Dunraven Arms Hotel in Adare 2.30pm Sun 24 May as part of Féile na Máighe, which runs from Friday 22 to 24 May. The competition was made an international event two years ago as part of The Gathering celebrations in the University of Limerick and was an enormous success. The competition moves this year nearer the home of the Limerick Verse, which originated by the banks of the Maigue River in the 18th century. Last year over 600 people entered the competition from all over Ireland and the world, with 50 finalists turning up for the final to do battle for cash prizes. Last year's event was won by Clare poet Knute Skinner after a tense competition. This year the final has been reduced to 25 final competitors but an equally exciting contest is expected . The aim of the competition is to create an awareness of the connection between the place and the poem so that Limerick can establish itself internationally as one of the few places that gave its name to a literary form. Think Shakespeare and Stratford, Joyce and Dublin, Burns and Scotland, Limerick and the Limerick. Entries are now been taken for the competition and local, national and international wordsmiths are encouraged to take part. You can enter on-line at www.facebook.com/limerickcompetition or pick up an entry form from your local library and various venues around the area. Entry is free and prizes are 1st €500; 2nd €100; 3rd €50. Tags: Limerick, Féile na Máighe |
