Insurance companies and Regulator should appear before Transport Committee about older vehicles |

Oireachtas Transport Committee member Brendan Griffin is calling for motor insurance companies and the Regulator to appear before the Oireachtas Transport Committee to explain their positions on insuring older vehicles. Deputy Griffin has written to the Committee Clerk and Committee Chairman, John O’Mahony TD, to request their appearance without delay. Mr Griffin said: “The practice of some drivers being unable to obtain insurance because they drive older vehicles seems to be discriminatory. I want to see this practice discontinued and I believe that the insurance industry and Regulator have questions to answer. “We have a rigid NCT system in this country and older cars must get an annual NCT certificate. This surely is adequate regulation of the roadworthiness of older vehicles for insurance companies and I believe that they should accept this. “The refusal to insure vehicles 15 years or older regardless of their roadworthiness sets a dangerous precedent. Will the limit be twelve years next and then ten and then eight? “The stance taken by insurance companies is causing great difficulty for people who may not be in a position to buy a newer vehicle or who choose to keep their older vehicle. It needs to be addressed and the Committee is the most appropriate place to do this.” Tags: Vehicle insurance |
