Plan to energy upgrade one million buildings launched

One million residential, public and commercial buildings in Ireland will get energy upgrades by 2020 under the latest national retrofit strategy. A consultation was launched this morning on the plan, which will aim to deliver 8,000 GWh of energy savings between 2011 and 2020.

The programme also proposes to drastically overhaul the grants system to make it more appealing, giving consumers up-front discounts on the cost of energy-saving products and services rather than a retrospective grant.

Construct Ireland circulation rises to new peak

The circulation of Construct Ireland has risen to a new high of 7,703, new figures from the latest Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) Island of Ireland report have revealed. With the highest audited circulation results ever achieved by an Irish construction trade magazine, Construct Ireland continues to buck the trend at a time when other construction magazines have shown declining circulations and have withdrawn from the independent audit process.

"We're delighted to show such continued growth, as it means we're connecting our many loyal clients in green construction and renewable energy with a growing and well informed readership of people looking to use their services," said editor Jeff Colley. "Our circulation is well over double that of any other Irish construction, engineering or architecture magazine, and growing. We've just got our most recent Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) results back, showing an average circulation of 7,703 over the last 12 months. That's up from 7,458 last year, and 6,693 the year before." Construct Ireland's continued growth contrasts with three other well-known ABC audited Irish construction trade magazines, which were ABC audited till recently. The highest recent ABC results for any of the three was 3,500 copies last year, which in itself was a decline on previous results.

"We're also planning to assess our total readership figures, to accurately estimate the the total number of people who read each copy of Construct Ireland," Colley said. "There doesn't appear to be an accurate rule of thumb in terms of number of readers per copy due to the vast differences in sector, quality and reader engagement with different types of magazines, but we suspect that an average copy of Construct Ireland is read by many people, based on consistent reader feedback that a single copy is often passed around the office, borrowed and even stolen. We're confident that each edition of Construct Ireland would therefore have in excess of 20,000 readers - highly targeted people interested or involved in sustainable building - and we're planning a reader survey to prove this."

Part L and green public procurement consultation deadlines : have your say or forever hold your peace

At Construct Ireland we're firm believers that if you think something's wrong, it's not good enough to just complain about it - you've got to take whatever chance you've got to make it right. Two such opportunities have come up for the green building sector, in the form of public consultations on the government's national action plan on green public procurement policy and the introduction of proposed 60% energy reductions under Part L of Building Regulations. The state's annual public procurement expenditure is some €17bn, and the proposed improvements will shift Ireland's energy standards for new homes from very good up to excellent - at least if they're understood and enforced properly, but that's another story....

The deadlines are as follows:

Green public procurement - end of August
Part L of Building Regulations - 29 October

Don't say you haven't been warned...

Did mould kill Hollywood actress and husband?

The web is awash with speculation that the tragic recent deaths of actress Brittany Murphy and her husband Simon Monjack both dying of pneumonia in the same house, within five weeks of each other, as the Daily Telegraph reports.

The Los Angeles Department of Public Health is to investigate the possible role that mould may have played in the deaths. If the theory proves correct it could do much to make people aware of the importance of maintaining good indoor air quality.
