The Limerick Writers' Centre presents the August 2014 'On the Nail' Literary Gathering on Tuesday 5 August 2014 at The Loft Venue, The Locke Bar, Georges Quay, Limerick at 8pm guest readers this month are Limerick's own Mae Leonard, County Clare writer Eddie Stack and Carolina African American Writers Collective member Raina J. León.
Mae Leonard is originally from Limerick, now living in Co. Kildare. She is a member of Poetry Ireland's Writers in Schools programme. For many years she has been broadcast regularly on RTE Radio One's, Sunday Miscellany programme. Awards include the Gerard Manley Hopkins Poetry award, Cecil Day-Lewis Award (for poetry and prose), Scottish International Poetry Awards, The Golden Pen, Francis McManus Short Story Competition and the Belmont Prize for Children's Poetry. A collection of poetry I Shouldn't Be Telling You This was published by Doghouse in 2011. My Home Is There 2 was published by The Limerick Writers' Centre in 2012.
Eddie Stack is from west Clare and teach at UC Berkeley in CA. He has published a fourth collection of short stories this years titled Borderline and has received several accolades for his fiction, including an American Small Press of the Year Award, and a Top 100 Irish American Award. Recognised as an outstanding short story writer, he is the author of three collections of short stories—The West, Out of the Blue and Quare Hawks; HEADS, a novel, and The Irish, three novellas.
His work has appeared in literary reviews and anthologies worldwide, including Fiction, Confrontation, Whispers & Shouts, Southwords and Criterion; State of the Art: Stories from New Irish Writers; Irish Christmas Stories, The Clare Anthology and Fiction in the Classroom.
Raina J. León, Cave Canem graduate fellow (2006), CantoMundo fellow, and member of the Carolina African American Writers Collective, has been published in numerous journals as a writer of poetry, fiction and nonfiction. Her first collection of poetry, Canticle of Idols, was a finalist for both the Cave Canem First Book Poetry Prize (2005) and the Andrés Montoya Poetry Prize (2006). Her second book, Boogeyman Dawn (2013, Salmon Poetry), was a finalist for the Naomi Long Madgett Prize (2010). She has received fellowships and residencies with Cave Canem, CantoMundo, Montana Artists Refuge, the Macdowell Colony, Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts, Vermont Studio Center, the Tyrone Guthrie Center in Annamaghkerrig, Ireland and Ragdale. She also is a founding editor of The Acentos Review, an online quarterly, international journal devoted to the promotion and publication of Latino and Latina arts. She is an assistant professor of education at Saint Mary's College of California.
Everyone is invited to take part in the open-mic after the main event, poets, storytellers, musicians and writers . Even if you don't write you are welcome to bring something along to read. The night begins at 8.00pm and admission is free. So join us on the night and make this event something special.
