Great Yeats Birthday Party at Lissadell House printable version

The Great Yeats Birthday Party is to take place at Lissadell House in County Sligo on 13 June 2015 to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of WB Yeats.

Announcing the event during a visit to Lissadell, Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Minister Heather Humphreys said: “The event will include writers and musicians, with poetry recitals, discussions and music. Yeats 2015, which is being funded by my Department as part of the Decade of Commemorations, is an exciting and engaging yearlong initiative celebrating one of our best known literary icons.

“I am also very pleased that Lissadell is planning a series of events next year to mark the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Rising. This will include a three day conference in May 2016. My Department is leading the plans for Ireland 2016, the Government’s national and international initiative to commemorate the Rising. I am encouraging as many people as possible to get involved right across the country, so I am delighted to see that Lissadell House is taking such a proactive approach.

“Lissadell is one of the country’s most beautiful and historically significant big houses. The building is well recognised for its architectural and historical significance and I am so pleased to see it open to the public as a major heritage asset in the North West region. I would like to acknowledge the work of Edward Walsh and Constance Cassidy in restoring the house over the last decade.

“Lissadell is a fantastic asset for Co Sligo, both in terms of the local community and as major draw for tourists. My Department is committed to protecting our built heritage, and as the economy continues to improve, I hope to be in a position to gradually increase supports for the upkeep and preservation of historic buildings.

“Irish country houses such as Lissadell are unique and irreplaceable repositories of architecture, art and history. They tell the stories not just of the families who created them, but also the communities and individuals who continue to sustain them. As Lissadell illustrates, they can also be wonderful venues for a wide range of events and activities.”
