“It’s not hard to bring out the worst in large numbers of citizens by constantly pressing their buttons; fear, hate, greed, false pride and blind loyalty are the main emotions used to manipulate people so much these last years. Reversing this process and empowering people through courage, love, generosity, humility and critical thinking is harder but it can and must be done.” -- Coleen Rowley for RootsAction; FBI whistle blower

Trump selects nominee to lead US global media agency

President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced Brent Bozell III as his nominee to lead the U.S. Agency for Global Media, which oversees VOA and other independent news networks.

Bozell is a conservative political activist and writer who founded the Media Research Center, an organization set up to counter what it identifies as liberal bias in media and popular culture. MRC has also challenged technology companies th

We live in times of multiple entwined crises - but our policy responses aren't keeping up

Existing policies to tackle environmental challenges fail to take into account that biodiversity loss, climate change and pollution are intertwined crises and produce compounding and intensifying impacts.

Policy measures taken in isolation are likely to result in unintended consequences.

These are key findings of two major assessment reports by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity

An unnecessary Ontario election won't help Canada deal with Donald Trump

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has been dropping hints for some time about the possibility of a provincial election this spring, if not sooner. Those hints are being reinforced by the pending arrival of $200 Expanding Heathrow is incompatible with net zero - here's the evidence

The UK government is set to back plans for a third runway at Heathrow, the country's busiest airport, and to expand two other airports near London: Gatwick and Luton. The move is designed to support the government's "mission" to grow the economy.

Air transport is notoriously hard to decarbonise. Unlike the energy system, or even road transport, there

Is Trump changing tack on ending the war in Ukraine?

The new US president, Donald Trump, has only been in office for a few days, but he has already changed his tune on the war in Ukraine. Trump has long spoken of his desire to end the war, and on the campaign trail even announced that he could stop the conflict within 24 hours of taking office.

This has no

How American Latinos came to embrace Donald Trump's immigration policy

Just a few years ago, if any political analyst or pundit had predicted that a US presidential candidate would gain a larger share of the Latino vote by promising to shut down the border, slam the door on migrants, deport millions of people, and even deny citizenship to babies born to immigrants, they would have been polite

Pope Francis autobiography: we've never known so much about the pontiff before

Constantly in the public eye, Pope Francis is instantly recognisable across the globe, and his likeness adorns t-shirts, mugs, calendars, bookmarks, medals and jewellery, among other things. Too conservative for some, not conservative enough for others, he is the face of the modern Catholic Church.

Yet it has not always been this way. It was only with Pope Pius IX in the mid-19th century that the papacy would bec

Netflix is snapping at the heels of the BBC. But there's more to the battle than just viewing figures

During the last quarter of 2024, Netflix pulled a larger audience in the UK than BBC One, becoming the country's most popular TV service. Across its entire portfolio, the BBC remains the nation's favourite news and entertainment destination, but this is nonetheless a significant milestone for a US-based streamer. Aft

AI voice technology used in The Brutalist is nothing new - the backlash is about transparency

Director Brady Corbet's stunning new film, The Brutalist, has won three Golden Globes and remains a frontrunner for this year's Oscars despite a Southport attack: changing the definition of terrorism won't stop the violence

Axel Rudakubana has been sentenced to a minimum 52 years in jail for the killing of three young girls in Southport in a stabbing attack in 2024. After Rudakubana pleaded guilty to the murders, Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a public inquiry, saying the state "failed in its duty" to protect the girls.

Whole-body deodorants: a solution to a non-existent problem

Step into any supermarket or pharmacy, and you'll find aisles brimming with products designed to make you smell "fresh", feel "clean", or somehow achieve a level of "purity" that no human body naturally possesses.

Whole-body deodorants have joined the lineup of intimate washes, douches and steaming kits, with internet searches for The Sun settles with Prince Harry: here's what we still don't know

Following a dramatic last-minute settlement in court, Prince Harry has again been victorious in his mission to take on the UK's tabloid press. Rupert Murdoch's News Group Newspapers (NGN) - publishers of the Sun as well as the now defunct News of the World - offered the Duke of Sussex a "full and unequivocal apology ... for the serious intrusion by the Sun betwee

How global inequalities hinder climate action

World leaders have gathered for the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland. One of their main goals is to align their responses to geopolitical shocks such as floods and wildfires that hamper trade, investment and more.

The meeting also supposedly aims to find ways to stimulate economic growth to improve l

How we uncovered the UK's biggest site of dinosaur tracks in a quarry in Oxfordshire

In 2024, researchers from the universities of Oxford and Birmingham excavated a huge expanse of a quarry floor in Oxfordshire filled with hundreds of dinosaur footprints.

Dating to the Middle Jurassic period (around 166 million years ago), the extensive trackways are part of what has been described as a huge "dinosaur highway". They form the largest

Will Donald Trump be ranked as a great president? Here's what the research tells us

Presidential "greatness" is a difficult thing to define, although many people have tried. One prevailing theory is that it requires a president to face great challenges, meet them by changing how the US functions, institutionalise those changes in a way that creates lasting impact, and convince the American people to support these changes by unifying (or at least coal

                                                     Origins of Poverty
When man came on earth he did not live in a society or hierarchy nor was he endowed with poverty. Good health, longevity, natural cheerfulness were his own even as he found himself amidst plenty. Like other species he lived or perished as the external resources permitted but he lived or perished as a group. Only when the society organised itself into a hierarchy, it was possible for one layer to exist while another persisted during times of scarcity. Organised ways of living, knowledge of all descriptions, systems created for comfort etc. interfered with the natural living of MAN in hundreds of ways. With the passing of time these stratifications of society come to stay and even create a psychology by which even the victim takes his victimization for granted. No question arises in his mind. ...

Had not the society organised itself in such a way that segments of it are protected and other segments were defenseless, MAN would have remained as MAN and would not have been bifurcated into poor and rich.

At the time they wouldn’t seem beautiful.
It was only afterwards that men felt pity for the things their hands had destroyed.”
