Peace and Neutrality Alliance Shannonwatch members are to hold their monthly vigil at the Shannon Airport roundabout this Sunday, 10 January.
Shannonwatch is part the Peace and Neutrality Alliance network and has been monitoring and protesting the use of Shannon Airport by armed foreign military powers on the grounds that it breaches Irish law and breaches Irish neutrality safeguards enshrined in the Irish Constitution. (Article 28.3 of the Constitution states: ‘War shall not be declared and the State shall not participate in any war save with the assent of Dáil Éireann’).
Roger Cole of Shannowatch said: “The first time all the leaders of the 1916 Rising met was in September 1914. One of the main decisions they made was to establish the Irish Neutrality League to oppose Irish participation in the Imperialist 1914-18 War.
“The Peace & Neutrality Alliance is therefore part of a deeply rooted tradition. It organised the first national demonstration against the use of Shannon Airport by US troops in May 2002.”
The vigil will be held at the Shannon Airport Roundabout between 2-3pm.
